Air Conditioner Coverage

Hot days are great for pool time, cold drinks, and finding any excuse to stand in front of a vent. They're not so great when your air conditioner decides to take a timeout.

As the temperatures and repair costs rise, it's smart to have a plan. With American Home Shield, you can enjoy a little extra peace of mind knowing help is just a click or call away. When you discover a covered breakdown, simply place a service request online, in the AHS app, or give us a call. We'll help you keep your cool all season long.

AHS will only provide coverage for access to a Covered Item through one layer of unobstructed drywall, and return such access opening to a Rough Finish. If the Covered Item can only be accessed through a concrete (including cinderblock) wall, floor, or ceiling, we will provide coverage for access to the Covered Item and return such access opening to a Rough Finish, subject to any Special Limits noted in this Plan Agreement. We will not cover the costs associated with accessing items that are not reasonably accessible or are inaccessible, such as those that cannot be accessed safely, due to an obstruction, or require non-standard specialized equipment to access the Covered Item. We will not provide service to any Covered Item where hazardous materials, such as animal waste, are present until such hazardous materials are removed or otherwise remediated.

All parts and components of permanently installed air conditioning systems up to a 5-ton capacity, including condensation line of the following types:
Ducted central electric split and package units
Geothermal units
Evaporative coolers
Wall air conditioners
Mini-splits
Not covered:
All parts and components of geothermal systems located outside or under the covered home’s main foundation
Fuel storage tanks
Window or portable air conditioning units
Water towers and chiller systems
Chillers and chiller components
Humidifiers and dehumidifiers
Ultraviolet lights
Home purification systems

Air Conditioner FAQs

Yes, all 3 of our home warranty plans cover parts and components of air conditioners and the covered item limit is $5,000 per system during your 1-year plan agreement term. Please see the plan agreement for more detailed coverage information, limitations and exclusions.

All 3 of our home warranty plans include coverage up to $5,000 per air conditioning system (per 1-year term) for ducted central and electric split and package units, geothermal, evaporative coolers, wall air conditioners, and mini-splits. They do not include coverage for window units, or outside or underground components for geothermal and/or water source heat pumps. Please see the coverage details on the page above or the plan agreement for more information on limitations and exclusions. 

Yes, all of our home warranty plans cover AC refrigerant up to $10/lb. An option to add unlimited AC refrigerant coverage is available for all plans - an important home warranty benefit to consider, since refrigerant can be expensive. If we can’t repair your covered air conditioning system, we’ll replace, no matter its age, subject to your plan's $5,000 per HVAC unit coverage limit and the other limitations and exclusions included in your plan agreement.

Once your coverage begins (30 days after you sign up for your new home warranty plan) you can place a service request 24/7 online via MyAccount, in the AHS app, or call 1-844-482-1157 during standard business hours to request service.

AC units generally last 10-20 years with proper maintenance.

Common issues include refrigerant leaks, frozen coils, dirty filters, and mechanical wear and tear.

It can cost up to thousands of dollars to repair an AC unit. Typically, it can cost up to $6,000 to repair or replace an AC unit without a home warranty.*

*Repair/replacement cost is the eightieth percentile as reported in a nationwide survey of homeowners conducted in 2024 by ClearVantage for American Home Shield.  

An AC refrigerant recharge involves refilling the refrigerant in the system. If you think your system may need this repair completed, you can submit a service request and pay your service fee to have one of our qualified, indepent repair Pros come out and diagnois the covered issue. If it is covered, they will repair the issue subject to your plan agreement terms.

Knocking, clicking, and buzzing can indicate different issues, from minor to serious. While AHS does not cover noises alone, sometimes a noise indicates a repair could be needed on a covered part as part of your home warranty plan coverage. If you think the noise could be indicative of a covered issue, you can video call* with a vetted, repair Technician in our AHS app to see if you can troubleshoot over the phone at no extra cost, or you can place a service request and pay your service fee for in-person repair help with a qualified, independent repair Pro. You can submit a service request online, in the AHS app, or by phone at 1-844-482-1157 during standard business hours to request service.
